How Buick and GMC Are Bringing AI to the Drive With Google Gemini

Artificial intelligence is becoming part of the everyday driving experience, and Buick and GMC are bringing Google Gemini to select vehicles equipped with Google built-in. Designed as an upgrade to Google Assistant, Gemini offers a more conversational way to search for information, manage compatible apps, adjust certain vehicle settings, and stay connected while on the road.

At Central Buick GMC, we believe technology should make driving easier to manage, not more complicated. Google Gemini is designed to help drivers communicate more naturally with their vehicle, whether the day involves commuting, running errands, coordinating family plans, or heading out for a weekend trip.

What Is Google Gemini in a Buick or GMC?

Google Gemini is an AI assistant that can be available in select Buick and GMC vehicles with Google built-in compatibility. It is designed to replace the prior Google Assistant experience for customers who choose to opt in and meet the applicable account, software, and connected-services requirements.

Instead of relying solely on short voice commands, Gemini is designed to understand more natural conversation. A driver can ask a question, add details, ask a follow-up, or revise a request without beginning the interaction again.

For example, rather than simply asking for a coffee shop, a driver may ask Gemini to find a highly rated coffee shop with outdoor seating along the current route. Gemini can then help provide relevant information, traffic updates, and navigation guidance through compatible services.

How Google Gemini Can Help on the Road

Google Gemini is designed to support a range of day-to-day driving tasks through natural voice interaction. Exact capabilities may vary by vehicle, software version, app availability, connectivity, account setup, and service plan.

In a compatible Buick or GMC vehicle, Gemini may help drivers:

  • Find restaurants, stores, attractions, or other stops that meet specific needs along a route.
  • Locate a compatible EV charging stop, including a request based on a particular connector type.
  • Receive real-time traffic updates and compatible navigation guidance.
  • Summarize incoming messages, read messages aloud, and help draft, edit, or translate text messages using voice interaction.
  • Request music, resume an audiobook, or tailor entertainment to a preferred mood or activity.
  • Adjust compatible vehicle settings, such as climate controls, through more natural spoken requests.
  • Access vehicle information, including available range details, through compatible voice commands.

These features are intended to help drivers complete certain tasks while keeping their hands on the wheel. They do not replace attentive driving. Drivers must remain alert, follow traffic laws, and avoid any interaction that could distract from safe vehicle operation.

Buick and GMC Technology, Made More Conversational

Google Gemini works through Google built-in, an integrated vehicle experience that can provide access to compatible Google apps and services through the infotainment system. Depending on vehicle equipment and availability, Google built-in can include Google Maps, Google Play, voice assistance, and other connected features.

The difference with Gemini is its emphasis on natural, context-aware conversation. The system is designed to understand more than a single command at a time, allowing drivers to refine a request or work through a multi-step task with fewer repeated prompts.

For Buick vehicles, Google built-in compatibility is available on models including the 2024 Buick Envision and 2025 Buick Enclave. Buick also identifies Google Gemini as available technology across select 2025 and 2026 vehicles, subject to equipment and eligibility.

For GMC vehicles, Google Gemini can support a more conversational approach to route planning, communications, entertainment, climate adjustments, and other compatible in-vehicle tasks. GMC notes that customers who are signed into a Google Account in an eligible vehicle with Google built-in can opt in to upgrade from Google Assistant to Gemini.

What Is Needed to Use Gemini?

Google Gemini availability is not identical for every Buick or GMC vehicle. To enable Gemini, a vehicle generally must have Google built-in compatibility, the required software and Google Maps updates, a supported assistant language, an active connected-services plan where applicable, and a signed-in Google Account.

GM states that Gemini is an opt-in experience. For model year 2024 and older eligible vehicles, a paid OnStar plan is required to use Gemini. For model year 2025 and newer eligible vehicles, GM states that voice assistance from Google is included with standard OnStar Basics, though feature availability remains subject to the applicable terms and vehicle compatibility.

Because eligibility can depend on model year, installed equipment, software, connectivity, and service-plan status, our team at Central Buick GMC can help confirm whether a specific Buick or GMC vehicle is compatible.
